Book Description
Because It's There takes us on a marvelous photographic journey with more than 90 adventurous and spectacular images from five continents. Authors/Photographers Charlie and Diane Winger believe there is no better reason to move beyond a familiar horizon, explore what lies around the next bend, and discover a world outside our previous experience than "Because it's there."

Like George Mallory, who uttered that famous response when asked why he strove to be the first to climb Mount Everest, the Wingers are also inspired by mountains. Charlie is the mountaineer of the family, and nearly all the snow-covered, glaciated, massive peaks in this photographic journey were his passion (and obsession). Diane is the hiker and casual rock climber, but has ventured up a few of those more challenging mountains along the way.

The Wingers draw on their extensive collection of photographs taken while writing guidebooks, climbing and trekking among some of the most beautiful peaks in the world, and enjoying time in special outdoor areas which they have come to love. Along the way, they tell a few stories and share a few laughs.

About the Author
Charlie is a prolific mountaineer with a passion for climbing lists of peaks: the 200 highest mountains in Colorado, the 50 state highpoints, 100 USGS-named peaks in Death Valley, the 57 ultra-prominence peaks in the lower US, the highest mountains in North and South America, Europe, Africa, and Australia, and many more lists few people understand (or want to).

Diane takes a more relaxed approach to hiking and rock climbing, placing a high priority on hiking on established trails, and hiking to places that are scenic. She is a member of the unofficial “49ers Club,” having reached the top of 49 state highpoints. Her motto: “Just say no to Denali.”

Charlie and Diane live in Colorado and are co-authors of several guidebooks on outdoor recreation. They also collaborated on Charlie’s memoir which delves into more details about his numerous climbing adventures and divulges his very surprising and inspiring personal history.

Beautiful on Cloud Reader on Mac
By Recliner Reader
I don't have a Kindle Fire and, because of the beautiful colors in most of the pictures, I think a lot would be lost viewing the book on my black and white Kindle. However, seen on the Cloud Reader on my Mac, the majority of the pictures were awe inspiring to a non climber who will never see any of these mountains in person. I gave 4 stars because for me the close up and/or group pictures of the climbers interrupted the flow of the pictures without people. However, the pictures of climbers from a distance accentuated the the grandeur of the mountains vs the specks of humanity represented by the climbers. Other than the pictures focusing on the climbers, I can't agree that the pictures are of amateur quality. Many of the pictures capture shadow and light in a way that enhances the beauty of the areas photographed. I didn't download the book to my Kindle because of its size and black and white limits, but I'm pleased to have enjoyed the pictures and commentary on the Cloud Reader.

"Breathtaking" Photographic Journey
By Jo Streep
Charlie and Diane Winger have done it again! Their photographic journey in "Because It's There" takes the reader from mountain peaks to crevasses to sand dunes to sunsets to beautiful flowers and finally to green rice fields across five continents. I would recommend that this book be purchased in conjunction with "Two Shadows" (or any of their other books) as it gives the reader a chance to not only read but also to see their journey and vicariously experience what brought the Winger's to publish some of the most breathtaking photographs this reader has ever seen.

Because It's There by Charles & Diane Winger

Because It's There gave me an opportunity to see the views that the climbers see. The photographic journey was relaxing and it helped me to understand the excitment the climbers find in this activity. The books makes a great coffeetable book and has been enjoyed by all those who have visited my home. I also purchased this book for my kindle so that I could share it with friends.
